Meter earthing came to light when a taxi was seized from the Gongabu
area for tampering with the meter. Under the monitoring of the MTPD, a
team, incorporating police and technicians from the Bureau of Standards
and Metrology, was formed two weeks ago to monitor taxi irregularities.
The team, in civvies, has already taken action against more than 300
taxis in the Capital. Cabbies who are found to have tampered with their
meters are sent to the Bureau of Standards and Metrology for further
action. The Bureau charges the taxi drivers with fine amounts ranging
from Rs 2,000 to Rs 5,000. “In case of earthing, we may also seize the
meter,” said Dhonju. According to him, only 11 dealers have licences to
sell taxi meters in Kathmandu.
