“I accepted the request without hesitation. I was supposed to
deliver the package in Kakarbhitta. But only when the police in Bagdogra
[in India’s West Bengal state] opened the package that I realized that I
had been used for smuggling gold,” he said requesting to be unnamaed.
“I was arrested and faced lots of hardships. Luckily my relatives in
India found the employer and handed him over to police, and I was
freed.”According to him, there are many Nepalis languishing in Indian
jails for similar reasons. “At that time, four other Nepalis were
serving jail terms for allegedly being involved in gold smuggling. Just
like me, their employers had used them to smuggle packages containing
huge amounts of illegal gold.”Likewise, about a month ago, Dilip Rai of
Panchthar and Nimesh Raya of Panitanki were arrested at Bagdogra
Airport. Police recovered 4 kg of gold from them. However, police
investigation revealed that both of them were only porters and had
agreed to deliver the gold to Kathmandu.Although police investigation
revealed that both of them were only used as porters, their employer is
still at large.
