Probably
best known as the forefather to the founding father of Nepal, Prithvi
Narayan Shah (PNS), who’s descendants, the Shah Kings of the Himalayan
Kingdom of Nepal (from at least 1559) to 2008. Drayva was the first Shah
king of the Gorkha Area, the cradle of modern Nepal and a important
historical figure in Nepali history. Yet we know little about him and
his descendants until PNS from whence information is more available.
Darya’s date of birth is not known but we know when he became King in
1559 AD. According to tradition of the Royal House of Nepal its lineage
goes back to the legendary brave Chittor dynasty of Rajahstan (India)
and Bappa Rawal. The early forefathers of the Shahs, Ranas and Kunwor`s
arrived in the Nepal area after 1303 AD with the fall of Chittor. Faced
with either conversion, execution, war or other forms of harassment and
misery many families left for a new life in the foothills of the
Himalayas. Here on the hills of the mighty mountains they found a new
life and mixed with the local people already living in the area mainly
of Mongoloid origin. In the hills the various communities kept their own
culture, social norms and traditions while also mixing and created a
distinct “Nepali” way…a multi-cultural & multi-ethnic society that
differs in many regards but share some common spheres and what it means
to be Nepali is still being discussed.
